It is no great secret that every school district will sing its own praise, but a district that is truly outstanding will not have to because parents and other community members will do it for them. This is exactly the case with the Fremont Unified School District. If you ask around, you will likely hear plenty of people offer rave reviews about how caring the teachers are and that even though some classes are larger, their children still manage to get undivided attention. Many teachers in other areas struggle to give students this amount of attention, even with smaller classes. Plus, teachers often work students in groups to promote teamwork and encourage them to make friends with someone they might not otherwise even talk to.
As you would expect from a district in an area that puts a strong focus on a healthy lifestyle, the schools are dedicated to making sure children receive proper nutrition. They also encourage smart snacking to help kids keep their energy level high throughout the day. In return, this helps them to be more focused. They even provide snacking tips for parents.
Encouraged Parental Involvement
Many schools cringe at the thought of parents being involved, but not here in Fremont. The district encourages parents to play a role in education on some level by offering volunteer opportunities. In fact, many are so supportive of the schools that they donate money to offset budget cuts. In addition to this, they provide valuable parent resources, including helpful booklets, testing calendars, literature lists, scholarships and contest information and more.
To improve the communication between parents, teachers and students, the school district adopted Resolution 064-1112 on 25 April 2012. This ensures that everyone is in the same loop and there is no miscommunication. A few features include homework email subscriptions, a captive message system, multilingual voice messaging, digital locker, student tracker and even a high priority group feature that allows staff to create custom groups as needed, other than what you would find in a classroom.
Unlike other school boards where members are hired in by someone already serving, this Board of Education is made up of five individuals who are elected by the district voters. A term consists of four years, and members can only serve two terms. The positions of the members rotate as well, which eliminates the risk of one person gaining too much power and abusing it.
Healthy Start Program
Some students need a little extra support than others. Therefore, the district has partnered with Easy Bay Agency for Children to create their Healthy Start Program. This provides support for those families that need referrals for healthcare. Families new to the district can take advantage of assistance from one of the Family Resource Specialists when needed to help achieve a happy home environment.
The school district understands that when a child is troubled at home, it is nearly impossible for them to concentrate on their studies. Not only are they distracted, they are unmotivated as well.
